Overnight I-95 Construction Set to Jam Northeast Philly All Week

Lane restrictions

PHILADELPHIA, PA — PennDOT is warning drivers to expect overnight slowdowns next week as major construction resumes on Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia, part of a long-running effort to widen and rebuild one of the region’s most critical highways.

From Monday, December 15, through Friday, December 19, nightly lane closures will be in effect from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM on both northbound and southbound I-95 between the Cottman Avenue (Route 73) and Allegheny Avenue interchanges. Crews will be removing and installing barriers, paving roadway sections, and making lane adjustments.

The work falls under PennDOT’s $355.3 million I-95 Section BR3 project, which is reconstructing and widening northbound I-95 from Wheatsheaf Lane to just north of Margaret Street.

PennDOT also reminded motorists that the ramp from Aramingo Avenue at the Bridge Street Interchange to I-95 South remains closed through mid-December. Drivers bound for I-95 South must detour by exiting at the Betsy Ross Bridge Interchange, turning right onto Aramingo Avenue, right onto Adams Avenue, and then right onto the ramp for I-95 South.

Officials cautioned that significant backups and delays are likely during overnight hours and urged motorists to allow extra travel time. All scheduled work is weather dependent.
