NORRISTOWN, PA — Norristown is officially moving its digital front door to a .gov address, a change municipal leaders say will strengthen security and make it easier for residents to verify they are interacting with legitimate local government offices.
Beginning in 2026, the municipality’s website and email system will operate under norristown.gov, replacing the long-used norristown.org domain. Officials said the transition is designed to add safeguards against fraud and impersonation while clearly identifying official government communications.
A phased rollout of the new domain began this month, with three smaller municipal departments making the initial switch. Residents who receive emails from addresses ending in norristown.gov can be confident the messages are coming from verified municipal employees, officials said.
To ease the transition, messages sent to existing norristown.org email addresses will automatically forward to the corresponding .gov accounts. Similarly, anyone typing norristown.org into a web browser will be redirected seamlessly to norristown.gov.
Municipal officials emphasized that the change comes at no cost to the municipality while delivering stronger cybersecurity protections for both the local government and the public. They said adopting a .gov domain also helps residents quickly identify official pages and avoid spoofed websites or fraudulent emails.
The full transition is expected to continue gradually into 2026 as additional departments move their email and online services to the new domain.
