Nighttime Lane Closures Scheduled for I-476 Construction Projects

Traffic alert, expect delays

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced extended nighttime lane closures on I-476 across Delaware and Montgomery counties as part of two major improvement projects. The work, which will target nearly 31.5 miles of roadway, is aimed at enhancing travel conditions, improving safety, and modernizing infrastructure along the interstate.

The closures and project timelines are as follows:

  • Southbound Lane Closure for Conduit Installation
    • From Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 13, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM, weeknight closures will occur between the Media Swarthmore (Exit 3) and MacDade Boulevard (Exit 1) interchanges. This is part of a $10.4 million initiative to install and integrate Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Queue Warning (QW) systems over 14.5 miles, designed to reduce congestion and enhance traffic safety.
  • Lane Closures for Resurfacing and Repairs in Both Directions
    • Weeknight closures are scheduled from Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 27, from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. These will impact sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and I-95 interchanges. This work, part of a $63.7 million project, includes resurfacing, bridge repairs, utility installation, and guiderail replacement across 17 miles.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time due to potential delays and traffic congestion within the work zones. All activities are weather dependent, and schedules are subject to modification if conditions necessitate.

PennDOT urges motorists to remain vigilant, adhere to posted signs, and proceed cautiously to ensure the safety of both crews and fellow travelers.
