NEWARK, DE — Motorists driving on Hillside Road in Newark will soon be monitored by the city’s first automated speed enforcement camera, part of a new program aimed at reducing speeding on residential streets.

What This Means for You

  • Drivers traveling 11 mph or more above the speed limit will initially receive warning notices.
  • After a 30-day warning period, speeding violations will result in civil citations mailed to drivers.
  • Tickets issued by the camera system will not add points to a driver’s license or affect insurance rates.

City officials said the camera was installed on Hillside Road between Sypherd Drive and West Main Street following the passage of both state and local legislation authorizing automated speed enforcement.

The camera is scheduled to begin tracking vehicle speeds on March 24, 2026.

How the Automated Speed Enforcement Works

Under the program, drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 miles per hour or more will first receive warning notices during the first 30 days of operation.

After the warning period ends, drivers traveling above that threshold will receive civil speeding citations through the mail.

City officials said the violations issued through the automated system are civil penalties rather than criminal offenses. As a result, they do not add points to a driver’s license and will not affect insurance rates.

Where Cameras May Be Used

The Hillside Road installation marks the city’s first speed camera deployment under the new law.

Newark officials said the city will initially operate one mobile camera unit that can be relocated among several pre-approved locations across the city.

Approved corridors include:

  • Capitol Trail between the city limits and Cleveland Avenue
  • Paper Mill Road between Wyncliff Lane and Old Paper Mill Road
  • Nottingham Road between Farmhouse Drive and Casho Mill Road
  • New London Road between the city limits and Country Club Drive
  • West Main Street between West Cleveland Avenue and Bent Lane
  • Casho Mill Road between Bent Lane and Church Road
  • Barksdale Road between King William Street and Apple Road
  • Woodlawn Avenue between Capitol Trail and Poplar Avenue
  • West Park Place between South College Avenue and South Main Street
  • West Chestnut Hill Road between Cobblefield Drive, Delgrove Avenue, South College Avenue, and Art Lane
  • South College Avenue between Holton Place and East Park Place
