PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA — The National Comprehensive Cancer Network, on World Cancer Day, observed February 4, highlighted its free patient guidelines aimed at helping people navigate a cancer diagnosis, according to the organization.
The not-for-profit alliance of 33 academic cancer centers said at least 20 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer each year, including about 2 million in the United States.
Breast, lung, prostate and colorectal cancers account for roughly half of all new cases globally, the organization said.
NCCN develops evidence-based clinical practice guidelines used by health care providers and also publishes plain-language versions for patients and caregivers at no cost.
The NCCN Guidelines for Patients library includes more than 70 books covering more than 50 cancer types, as well as screening, prevention and survivorship topics, according to the organization.
Topics include management of treatment side effects, cancer-related distress and recommendations for adolescents and young adults.
Crystal S. Denlinger, chief executive officer of NCCN, said the organization’s guidelines are developed through expert consensus and are intended to support shared decision-making between patients and clinicians.
