NBME Marks 110 Years of Advancing Medical Assessment Standards

National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME)

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) is celebrating its 110th anniversary, highlighting more than a century of work to strengthen the qualifications of medical professionals and improve patient care through rigorous assessment.

Founded in 1915, NBME was created to raise the standard of medical licensing and allow physicians to practice across states without additional examinations. Today, the organization continues that mission through the development and administration of the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®), which it manages in partnership with the Federation of State Medical Boards. First implemented in 1992, the USMLE has become the national benchmark for physician licensure.

Beyond licensing, NBME provides a broad portfolio of assessments for medical students and other health care professionals. The organization is now focusing on new tools that emphasize formative assessment, enabling learners to identify knowledge gaps and refine clinical skills throughout their careers.

Looking ahead, NBME said it is exploring how technologies such as artificial intelligence and natural language processing can be used to deliver more personalized feedback, supporting continuous improvement and preparing a diverse, effective health care workforce.
