Midday Road Closure To Snarl State Road Traffic Through July

Traffic Alert

UPPER DARBY TWP, PA — A major utility project is set to disrupt daily travel in Delaware County, as Aqua Pennsylvania begins months-long construction that will close a key stretch of State Road in Upper Darby Township.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that Aqua Pennsylvania will conduct utility improvements under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit, triggering weekday closures beginning Friday, February 27, and continuing through Friday, July 31.

Under the restriction, State Road will be closed between Lansdowne Avenue and Hilltop Road from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The closure is expected to affect commuters, commercial traffic, and local residents throughout the corridor during peak midday travel hours.

Motorists will be detoured via Lansdowne Avenue, U.S. 1 (Township Line Road), and Route 3 (West Chester Pike). PennDOT officials warn that backups and delays are likely, particularly as traffic shifts onto already busy regional arteries.

Local access to homes and businesses along State Road will be maintained during construction, but drivers are urged to allow additional travel time and remain alert in the work zone. All activities are weather dependent and may be adjusted as conditions require.

With the closure spanning more than five months, the project is expected to reshape traffic patterns well into the summer.
