Microsize Expands Global Footprint With Bold Move Into European Micronization

Business News

QUAKERTOWN, PA & MONTEGGIO, Switzerland — Microsize said it has agreed to acquire Micro-Macinazione, a Lonza-operated micronization facility in Monteggio, Switzerland, marking the company’s second major purchase from Lonza and a significant step toward building a transatlantic particle-engineering platform.

The deal follows Microsize’s 2022 acquisition of Lonza’s Quakertown, Pennsylvania site. In the new transaction, Switzerland’s Schedio Group will invest alongside Microsize to strengthen the company’s European presence and expand a partnership focused on next-generation particle processing technologies.

Micro-Macinazione, known as Mic Mac, brings more than three decades of experience in GMP-compliant jet milling and micronization for clinical and commercial drug products. Microsize said the acquisition adds seasoned technical talent, established regulatory credentials, and durable infrastructure to support its expanding customer base.

“The acquisition agreement represents a critical step in building Microsize into a global leader in particle engineering,” said CEO TJ Higley. He said Mic Mac’s capabilities align closely with the company’s U.S. operations, giving customers streamlined access to services across both continents and extending support from early development through commercialization.

Lonza also framed the transition as a logical continuation of the companies’ prior collaboration. Jan Vertommen, vice president of commercial development for Lonza Advanced Synthesis, said the move positions Microsize to offer specialized micronization services across the U.S. and Europe, adding that the companies’ history should allow for a smooth transition for Mic Mac’s clients.

Microsize and Schedio plan to invest jointly to modernize the Monteggio site, enhance its technical capabilities, and build a more integrated network for advanced particle engineering. The strategy pairs Microsize’s CDMO experience with Schedio’s containment systems, jet mills, and process technologies.

Mattia Wiedemeier, chief commercial officer of Schedio Group, said the collaboration embodies the company’s belief in the “Power of Together.” He said combining infrastructure, innovation, and execution will help customers meet rising expectations for safety, speed, and quality.

Microsize chairman Derek Hennecke said the acquisition positions the company as a specialized global platform dedicated to particle-size control, supported by decades of operational depth and a growing international footprint.

The companies expect the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2026, pending customary approvals.
