PHILADELPHIA, PA — Behind the crowds, flight boards, and security lines at Philadelphia International Airport, a custodial worker who cleans restrooms is being honored for something far less routine: compassion under pressure.
Jeanine Wing, a Custodial Worker II with the Department of Aviation, has received PHL’s “Unsung Heroes” award, a distinction reserved for employees whose behind-the-scenes work plays a critical role in the airport’s daily operations and passenger experience.
Wing, who has worked at the airport for more than three years, is responsible for maintaining restrooms throughout the terminal complex during the busy 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift. Coworkers describe her as bubbly, friendly, and consistently willing to go beyond her job description to help travelers in need.
“I love my job,” Wing said. “I love coming into work. I like helping people. If a passenger does not speak English, I try to assist them as best as I can and guide them to someone who can help them.”
Her nomination came after Department of Aviation Chief Commercial Officer Kate Sullivan witnessed Wing personally escorting a visibly anxious passenger who was struggling to locate his departure gate. The man’s boarding pass did not list a gate assignment, and with boarding time approaching, his anxiety escalated when he learned he was in the wrong terminal.
“Don’t worry, I will walk you to your gate,” Wing told the passenger, according to Sullivan’s nomination. Sullivan said Wing not only guided him to the information desk but then took full responsibility for ensuring he reached Terminal E safely, remaining empathetic, attentive, and calm throughout the ordeal.
Sullivan said Wing’s actions reflected ownership, professionalism, and genuine care — qualities that define the Unsung Heroes award.
Wing said she enjoys working in an environment that brings together people from all over the world and values the diversity of personalities she encounters daily. She is also fascinated by aviation, often watching aircraft activity from Terminal F.
“It’s just a great experience to look outside and see the planes fly in, I feel so lucky,” Wing said. “I love seeing how hard employees work at the airport. I love how committed they are to their jobs. It’s refreshing to see.”
Some of her most meaningful moments have come during small acts of kindness, including helping a stranded passenger secure formula and diapers for her baby.
Wing credited her colleagues for creating a supportive workplace and thanked Sullivan for the nomination, as well as Custodial Work Supervisor I Moda Ndiaye for his leadership and encouragement.
At one of the nation’s busiest airports, officials said Wing’s recognition serves as a reminder that the passenger experience is shaped not only by schedules and infrastructure, but by the people quietly keeping everything — and everyone — moving.
