MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Drivers should prepare for significant weekend detours as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) continues work on its $55.1 million project to widen and reconstruct U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) through Norristown, East Norriton, and Whitpain townships.
From 6:00 PM Friday, November 21, to 6:00 PM Saturday, November 22, the intersection of Johnson Highway and Arch Street/Old Arch Road will be closed for roadway construction and paving. Eastbound Johnson Highway traffic will be detoured via U.S. 202 and either Germantown Pike or Fornance Street, while westbound motorists will be directed to use New Hope Street and Fornance Street or New Hope Street/Arch Road to Germantown Pike. Arch Street and Old Arch Road drivers will also follow detours using New Hope Street and Fornance Street.
Local access will remain open up to the construction zone. Motorists are urged to plan alternate routes or expect delays, as traffic congestion is anticipated during the closure. All work is weather dependent.
The current phase is part of a larger effort to improve 1.8 miles of U.S. 202 by expanding the highway from two lanes to two northbound, one southbound, and a center turn lane. The project also includes the addition of bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, upgraded drainage, sound walls, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and major intersection and signal improvements.
In addition, Germantown Pike will continue to operate with a single lane in each direction between Swede Road and Hannah Avenue through July 2027 as part of the multi-phase corridor upgrade, which spans 9.1 miles between Norristown and Montgomery Township.
