PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a series of closures affecting southbound Interstate 95 and the ramp from eastbound I-676 as part of the $329 million I-95 CAP project in Center City Philadelphia. These closures will begin on Sunday, June 8, and are expected to last approximately six weeks, ending around Friday, July 18. The work involves the installation of deck beams for the new concrete covering over the interstate.
Preliminary preparations will take place on Tuesday, June 3, from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM, during which time southbound I-95 and the ramp from I-676 will be closed between I-676 and the southbound on-ramp from Columbus Boulevard at E. Morris/Water Street.
Beginning Sunday, June 8, southbound I-95 and the ramp from I-676 to southbound I-95, as well as an inside lane of northbound I-95, will close nightly from Sundays through Thursdays, 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM. These closures will exclude the Independence Day weekend.
During the closures, drivers heading south on I-95 will be redirected to use the Girard Avenue Interchange (Exit 23), southbound Delaware Avenue/Columbus Boulevard, and E. Morris Street/Water Street to rejoin southbound I-95. Meanwhile, motorists traveling eastbound on I-676 to southbound I-95 will be detoured at 8th Street, with further instructions to follow local routes to Columbus Boulevard and E. Morris Street/Water Street to regain access to I-95 southbound.
PennDOT has advised travelers to allow extra time while moving through these areas due to potential delays and significant traffic backups. All work is weather dependent and subject to change based on conditions.
