Major Germantown Pike Overhaul Begins June 16 – Expect Years of Traffic Changes!

Traffic, flagging

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that significant roadway reconstruction will begin on Monday, June 16, along Germantown Pike at its intersection with U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in East Norriton Township. The work is part of a $55 million project aimed at improving and reconstructing approximately 1.8 miles of U.S. 202 in Montgomery County.

Beginning on June 16 and continuing through July 2027, Germantown Pike will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Swede Road and Hannah Avenue. Left-turn lanes and access for businesses and residences will remain open. However, motorists should expect significant delays and are advised to consider alternate routes or allow additional travel time.

The phased Germantown Pike reconstruction includes the following enhancements:

  • Installation of new drainage pipes and inlets.
  • Full-depth removal and reconstruction of the roadway.
  • Construction of new sidewalks, curbs, ADA-compliant ramps, and concrete islands.
  • Traffic signal upgrades, new crosswalks, and improved lighting at the intersection.

This construction is part of a broader undertaking to widen and enhance U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike). Key objectives of the larger project include:

  • Expanding the roadway to accommodate two northbound lanes, one southbound lane, and a central turn lane from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road.
  • Adding five-foot bicycle lanes in both directions.
  • Building new sidewalks, a reconstructed bridge, a box culvert, retaining walls, and sound walls.
  • Upgrading traffic signals, signage, drainage systems, and pavement markings.
  • Integrating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to bolster traffic flow.

The U.S. 202 improvement project forms part of a multi-phase initiative targeting 9.1 miles of the corridor, stretching from Johnson Highway in Norristown to Route 309 in Montgomery Township.
