PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers heading through Center City should prepare for significant disruptions as a long-term bridge construction project will shut down part of southbound 30th Street and restrict westbound Market Street starting Wednesday, March 25.
At a Glance:
- Roads Affected: Southbound 30th Street, Westbound Market Street
- Dates: Wednesday, March 25, through approximately Monday, June 1
- Times: 24/7 restrictions
- Reason: Bridge reconstruction and rehabilitation
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, southbound 30th Street will be fully closed between JFK Boulevard and Market Street, while westbound Market Street will be reduced to a single lane between Schuylkill Avenue and 30th Street.
Drivers traveling south on 30th Street or trying to reach Market Street will be detoured by turning right onto JFK Boulevard, then continuing to reconnect with Market Street near 32nd Street. Local access to the west portico of 30th Street Station will remain available.
The work is part of a $148.9 million infrastructure project to rehabilitate multiple Market Street bridges spanning Amtrak rail lines, Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway), the Schuylkill River Trail, and a CSX rail line.
Motorists should expect heavy congestion in and around 30th Street Station throughout the project. Plan extra time, especially during peak commuting hours, and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
