Major Bethel Avenue Intersection Overhaul to Begin July 23 as Part of $99 Million U.S. 322 Widening Project

Traffic Advisory

UPPER CHICHESTER TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that major construction will begin Wednesday, July 23, to reconstruct, widen, and modernize the intersection of Bethel Avenue with U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) and Cherry Tree Road in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County.

The project is a key component of a $99.47 million effort to overhaul a 1.4-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway), improving safety and reducing congestion on this heavily traveled corridor.

Starting July 23 and continuing through late 2026, Bethel Avenue will be closed around the clock at the intersection with U.S. 322 and Cherry Tree Road. During this period, motorists using Bethel Avenue will be detoured via Route 452 (Market Street) and westbound U.S. 322. Drivers on eastbound U.S. 322 headed to Bethel Avenue will continue east and use the Route 452 South/Dutton Street ramp for access.

PennDOT urges drivers to allow extra travel time and remain alert for backups and delays in the area.

The intersection improvements include reconstructing the area to provide four through lanes on U.S. 322 and adding turn lanes to Bethel Avenue and Cherry Tree Road. Bethel Avenue and Cherry Tree Road will be realigned and rebuilt to feature separate turn and through lanes, and new traffic signals will be installed to enhance traffic flow and safety.

Additionally, a new connector road from Bethel Road will be constructed, creating a new intersection with School Drive to further improve local connectivity.

This project marks the second of four major construction phases aimed at widening and modernizing a 6.7-mile stretch of U.S. 322 through Concord, Bethel, and Upper Chichester townships. The comprehensive improvements are designed to address longstanding safety concerns and accommodate increasing traffic volumes on this critical regional route.
