BETHLEHEM, PA — Lehigh University‘s College of Education professors Dr. Minyi Dennis and Dr.. Zilong Pan are joining a national research team through a $922,923 National Science Foundation grant to study mathematics interventions that support students with learning difficulties.
The grant, titled “Exploring Sources of Heterogeneity in Supplemental Interventions for Students with Mathematics Difficulties within Multi-tiered Systems of Support: A Meta-Analysis,” is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Jonte A.. Myers and co-Principal Investigator Dr. Therese D. Pigott from the Georgia State University Research Foundation Inc.
Dennis and Pan will apply their expertise in meta-analysis and intervention design alongside Myers and Pigott, focusing on synthesizing nearly five decades of research to identify which instructional strategies are most effective for diverse K-12 learner populations. The project will utilize advanced meta-regression and machine learning techniques to assess factors such as intervention dosage, alignment with mathematical concepts, and student background. The findings will assist teachers and policymakers nationwide in improving mathematics support and expanding STEM opportunities for struggling learners.
This multi-institutional collaboration is expected to offer actionable insights that strengthen practices in classrooms across the country and narrow achievement gaps for students facing barriers in mathematics
