Late-Night Lane Closures Set to Disrupt U.S. 1 Near I-295 in Bucks County

Traffic Advisory

MIDDLETOWN TWP, PA — Drivers traveling U.S. 1 in Bucks County should prepare for overnight disruptions Monday night as PennDOT advances a major bridge repair project along one of the region’s busiest corridors.

PennDOT announced that construction barriers will be removed beneath Interstate 295 in Middletown Township as part of a $37.4 million effort to address high-priority repairs on interstate bridges critical to regional safety and mobility. The work will require lane closures in both directions on U.S. 1 approaching the I-295 interchange from 9:00 PM Monday until 5:00 AM Tuesday.

Motorists can expect traffic backups and delays during the overnight operation. PennDOT advised drivers to allow extra travel time and remain alert in the work zone. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The barrier removal is part of a broader contract focused on repairing deteriorated bridge decks, superstructures, and substructures along key interstate routes. Planned work includes repairs to structural steel and weld cracks, prestressed concrete beams, reinforced concrete bridge decks, bridge railings, guiderail, and steel sign supports. Crews will also replace expansion joints, seal deck joints, and rehabilitate strip seal glands.

Substructure work will involve repairing or reconstructing bearing pedestals, fixed bearings, and damaged concrete elements, along with cleaning bridge seats, resetting expansion bearings, and removing debris beneath the bridges.

In addition to structural repairs, the project calls for cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading existing roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.
