WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Drivers on Interstate 476 should brace for delays Sunday as PennDOT moves forward with temporary line striping tied to a massive $63.7 million reconstruction project spanning Montgomery and Delaware counties.
PennDOT said mobile lane closures will be in place on sections of northbound and southbound I-476 between the I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and Route 3 (West Chester Pike) interchanges from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The work is expected to slow traffic in both directions, with backups likely throughout the day.
The striping is part of a long-term effort to resurface, repair, and modernize nearly 17 miles of the Blue Route, including on- and off-ramps and bridges stretching from West Conshohocken Borough to I-95 in Ridley Township. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
Under the project, PennDOT’s contractor will mill and overlay travel lanes and shoulders in both directions, perform repairs on 49 structures, upgrade 21 stormwater management basins, address rock slope stabilization issues, repair existing sound walls, replace drainage inlets at select locations, and install new pavement markings, delineators, rumble strips, signage, and guiderail.
PennDOT said the work is designed to extend the interstate’s service life while improving ride quality and overall safety, particularly in areas where roadside infrastructure and drainage elements have deteriorated.
H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack is serving as the general contractor. The project is financed entirely with federal funds.
Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, remain alert in work zones, and plan alternate routes where possible.
