DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — Motorists traveling northbound on Interstate 476 next week should expect daytime delays as PennDOT crews continue work on a project designed to improve congestion management and roadway safety.
At A Glance
- Roads Affected: Interstate 476 (northbound) between U.S. 1 (Exit 5) and the Sproul Road overpass
- Dates: Monday, March 9 – Friday, March 13
- Times: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Reason: Fiber repair tied to traffic management system upgrades
PennDOT said a weekday lane closure will be in place along the northbound lanes of I-476 between the U.S. 1 interchange and the Sproul Road overpass in Marple Township while crews perform fiber repairs tied to a broader technology upgrade along the corridor.
The work is part of a $10.4 million project installing Variable Speed Limit and Queue Warning systems across roughly 14.5 miles of I-476 in Delaware and Montgomery counties.
When completed, the Variable Speed Limit system will allow PennDOT to adjust posted speeds electronically based on traffic conditions, incidents, and weather to help smooth traffic flow and reduce crash risks.
The Queue Warning system will use electronic message boards to alert drivers when traffic slows suddenly ahead, helping reduce the likelihood of rear-end collisions during heavy congestion.
Drivers traveling through the construction zone should expect backups and plan extra time during the daytime work hours. Motorists may also want to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.
Kuharchik Construction Inc. of Exeter is the general contractor for the federally funded project.
