COLMAR, PA — Chef Peter Chang, a James Beard Award finalist celebrated for his authentic Chinese cuisine, will open Mama Chang in Colmar, Montgomery County, in early October. The restaurant will debut with a free community party featuring a lion dance, ribbon cutting, and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and refreshments on Friday, October 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at 118 Bethlehem Pike.

Mama Chang is named in honor of the women in Chang’s family, including his wife, daughter, and 84-year-old mother, and will spotlight home-style Hunan, Hubei, and Sichuan dishes rooted in family recipes.

“Mama Chang is dedicated to the women in our family,” said Lydia Chang, Peter’s daughter and CEO of the restaurant group. “We will showcase dishes from China’s central Hubei province that my grandmother would cook at home for our family, and also the savory cooking of my mom, Lisa, who is an accomplished chef in her own right. You don’t see these types of menu items very often in the U.S. Dining at Mama Chang’s is meant to feel like one is dining at a multigenerational Chinese family table.”

Menu highlights include Mama Chang’s Home-style Meal — featuring homemade fish cake, fish ball, and yellow braised meatball — alongside Sweet Potato Noodles with pork and mustard greens, Chicken in Black Pepper Sauce, Spiced Pork Belly with tea eggs, Tomato-scrambled Eggs with shrimp, and Peking Duck served with homemade pancakes. Prices range from $7 to $15 for appetizers, $15 to $19 for entrees, and $18 to $38 for family-style sharing plates.

The restaurant spans 9,700 square feet, seating 280 guests across two dining rooms and a private event space. The décor features light-colored layered wood and hand-carved panels framing large communal tables, creating a warm and family-centered atmosphere.

He was a 2016 James Beard finalist for Best Chef, Mid-Atlantic, and a 2022 semifinalist for Outstanding Chef. Mama Chang will be his second Pennsylvania outpost, following Peter Chang in King of Prussia.
