WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) announced that Diana Pani, vice president and head of wireless standards, has been re-elected as chair of the 3GPP Radio Access Network Working Group 2 (RAN2). Her second term comes at a pivotal moment as the industry prepares for the transition from 5G-Advanced to 6G.
Guiding Global Standards for Wireless Connectivity
RAN2 plays a critical role in setting the technical protocols that ensure devices and networks operate seamlessly across mobile generations. Its work underpins the performance, security, and interoperability of wireless networks worldwide.
During her first two-year term, Pani oversaw consensus building around key specifications for 5G-Advanced, including the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning for mobility, ambient IoT, non-terrestrial networks, sidelink evolution, and enhanced quality of experience for extended reality applications.
“Diana’s reelection as Chair of RAN2 underscores her standing as one of the most accomplished and respected leaders in global wireless standards,” said Rajesh Pankaj, InterDigital’s chief technology officer. “Her continued leadership will be vital as RAN2 advances 5G-Advanced and lays the foundation for 6G.”
Experience Across Multiple Generations of Standards
Pani brings 15 years of experience in the wireless standards community. Before serving as chair, she completed two terms as vice chair of RAN2 and chaired sessions across multiple 3GPP releases, including Release 15 through Release 18. She has played a direct role in shaping the specifications for the NR User Plane, central to the launch of 5G, and has made contributions spanning three generations of cellular technology: 3G, 4G, and 5G.
Looking Ahead to 6G
Her second term as chair will extend RAN2’s focus to designing the initial release of 6G, a task that will require forging consensus among stakeholders in one of the most complex and competitive areas of global technology development.
Yuval Mika, InterDigital’s executive vice president of bioelectronic therapies, highlighted the broader significance of Pani’s leadership: her ability to align technical rigor with collaborative decision-making has positioned her as a key figure in shaping the future of wireless innovation.
As the wireless industry advances, Pani’s role at RAN2 ensures that InterDigital remains at the forefront of the evolving standards that will define the next generation of connectivity.
