InterDigital’s Bold Legal Push Targets Amazon in Global Patent Fight

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DEInterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) has launched a sweeping series of lawsuits against Amazon, accusing the tech giant of infringing core video-technology patents used across several Amazon devices and streaming services.

The dispute centers on intellectual property tied to video compression and high dynamic range (HDR) technology—key components that enhance picture quality and reduce bandwidth use. InterDigital says the patents at issue are used in products such as Amazon’s Fire TV and Kindle devices, as well as in the company’s flagship Prime Video service.

Litigation is underway in multiple jurisdictions, including the U.S. Federal District Court in Delaware, the Rio de Janeiro State Court in Brazil, the Munich Regional Court in Germany, and the Unified Patent Court’s Local Division in Mannheim. The multi-front legal strategy signals InterDigital’s determination to secure compensation for its research portfolio.

Josh Schmidt, InterDigital’s Chief Legal Officer, said the company prefers negotiated licensing deals but argued Amazon’s actions left them little choice. According to Schmidt, Amazon initiated litigation earlier in the year, prompting InterDigital to respond in kind.

Schmidt said the company’s innovations enable Amazon to deliver high-quality video content worldwide and emphasized InterDigital’s intent to protect the value of its research investments. He added that securing appropriate compensation is critical to funding future technological development.

InterDigital, known for developing foundational technologies used across the wireless and consumer-electronics industries, has a long history of enforcing its patents through both licensing and litigation. The outcome of its latest confrontation with Amazon could influence wider industry negotiations around video-streaming standards and device capabilities.
