WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) announced it has established a Haptic Excellence Center in collaboration with Razer to support research, development and education related to haptic technology.
The company said the center will focus on advancing innovation, implementation and promotion of haptics for media experiences that integrate touch-based feedback with audio and video.
InterDigital cited data from a Futuresource and InterDigital white paper stating that about 4.1 billion consumer devices were equipped with haptic technology at the end of 2024, with projections that 53% of consumer devices will be haptic enabled by 2028.
According to the company, the center will work on developing a haptic streaming platform designed to support the creation, encoding, synchronization and delivery of haptic data alongside audio and video content.
The initiative will also partner with universities to support research and education related to haptic systems and applications.
Rajesh Pankaj, chief technology officer at InterDigital, said the center is intended to support collaboration between industry and academia to advance experimentation and understanding of haptic technologies.
Eric Vezzoli, director of technology at Razer, said the collaboration aims to advance an open haptics framework and streaming research to enable broader deployment of the technology.
InterDigital is headquartered in Wilmington and develops wireless and video technologies used in consumer devices and networks.
