PHILADELPHIA, PA — Southbound Interstate 95 drivers in Philadelphia are being warned of overnight lane closures next week that will usher in a long-term traffic shift tied to a major bridge repair project along one of the region’s busiest corridors.
PennDOT announced that barrier installation and related construction will take place overnight from Tuesday, January 13, through Friday, January 16, to establish a new traffic pattern on southbound I-95 between Spruce Street and Packer Avenue.
Each night, a single lane will close from 9:00 PM to 12:00 AM, followed by a double lane closure from 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM. PennDOT said significant backups and delays are expected during the overnight work. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.
By 5:00 AM Saturday, January 17, crews are expected to have a new long-term traffic configuration in place. The revised pattern will remain through late May while critical bridge repairs are completed and will maintain three lanes of through traffic at all times in the work zone.
The work is part of a $37.4 million federally funded project focused on high-priority repairs to interstate bridges to preserve safety, mobility, and structural integrity. Under the contract, crews will repair deteriorated bridge decks, steel superstructure components, prestressed concrete beams, bridge railings, guiderail, and steel sign supports. Expansion joints and deck seals will be replaced, while substructure repairs will include work on bearings, concrete elements, and bridge seats.
Additional improvements include cleaning and repainting 11 overhead steel sign structures and upgrading existing roadway lighting to energy-efficient LED luminaires.
IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Hamilton, New Jersey, is serving as the general contractor on the project.
With overnight closures giving way to months-long traffic shifts on a heavily traveled stretch of I-95, motorists are urged to plan ahead and stay informed as conditions change.
