I-95 North Traffic Shift to Disrupt Northeast Philadelphia

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A sweeping traffic shift on Interstate 95 will tighten lanes, close ramps, and usher in two years of reconstruction along one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors beginning Tuesday night in Northeast Philadelphia.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that single and double lane closures, along with two ramp shutdowns, will take effect Tuesday, February 17, as crews prepare to shift traffic into a long-term pattern tied to the $355.3 million I-95/BR3 project.

From 7:00 p.m. Tuesday to 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, single and double lane closures will be in place on northbound I-95 between the Allegheny/Castor Avenue and Cottman Avenue (Route 73) interchanges for barrier placement and line striping.

Additionally, from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., the on-ramps to northbound I-95 from Aramingo Avenue and from the Betsy Ross Bridge will be closed to facilitate the traffic pattern setup.

During the ramp closures, motorists will be directed to travel north on Aramingo Avenue, turn right onto Tacony Street, then right onto Bridge Street to access the northbound I-95 ramp. Alternatively, drivers may detour south on Aramingo Avenue and turn left onto Castor Avenue to reach the northbound entrance.

By early Wednesday, three lanes of northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted onto the southbound side and median between the Allegheny Avenue and Bridge Street interchanges. The configuration will allow reconstruction of the northbound lanes to begin and will tie into the existing six-lane construction pattern at the Bridge Street Interchange. The result will be a continuous work zone stretching from north of Allegheny Avenue to near the Cottman Avenue Interchange.

The massive undertaking will reconstruct northbound I-95 from Wheatsheaf Lane to just north of Margaret Street, marking one of the most significant infrastructure efforts in the Philadelphia region.

All scheduled activities are weather permitting. PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra time when traveling northbound on I-95 north of Center City, as delays are expected during the transition and throughout the duration of the project.

With lane shifts, ramp closures, and long-term construction ahead, drivers are urged to monitor conditions before heading out.
