MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that roadway reconstruction on Germantown Pike at its intersection with U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in Montgomery County officially began today. The $55 million project aims to enhance traffic flow and safety, with work scheduled to continue through July 2027.
During construction, Germantown Pike is now reduced to a single lane in each direction between Swede Road and Hannah Avenue in East Norriton Township. Left turn lanes and local access to businesses and residences will remain available throughout all phases of the project.
Crews will conduct the work in stages to minimize disruption while performing tasks such as installing drainage systems, removing old roadway material, constructing new curbs and sidewalks, and paving. Additional upgrades will include ADA-compliant ramps, modern traffic signals, crosswalks, lighting, and concrete islands.
The broader U.S. 202 improvement initiative includes widening and reconstructing a 1.8-mile segment from Johnson Highway to Township Line Road, expanding it to two northbound lanes, one southbound lane, and a center turn lane. The enhancements also include five-foot bicycle lanes, sidewalks, new signals, signage, and pavement markings. The project plans feature sound walls, retaining walls, drainage upgrades, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and rebuilding a bridge and box culvert.
This reconstruction is part of a larger effort to modernize a 9.1-mile stretch of U.S. 202 between Johnson Highway in Norristown and Route 309 in Montgomery Township. PennDOT has advised motorists to allow extra time or use alternate routes during construction, as traffic delays are expected.
With its focus on long-term roadway improvements, this project seeks to improve accessibility and safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in one of Montgomery County’s most heavily traveled corridors.
