Historic Bucks County Bridge Closure to Detour Thousands Starting January

Traffic Restrictions

NORTHAMPTON TWP, PA — A key stretch of Route 232 in Bucks County will shut down around the clock for nearly a month starting in January as PennDOT undertakes critical repairs to a decades-old bridge spanning a branch of Neshaminy Creek.

PennDOT said the bridge carrying Route 232, also known as Second Street Pike, will be closed and detoured 24 hours a day from Tuesday, January 6, through Friday, January 30, between Twining Road and Sacketts Ford Road. The closure will affect thousands of drivers daily and is expected to generate significant delays in the surrounding area.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured via Route 332 (Newtown Richboro Road/Richboro Road), the Newtown Bypass (Route 413/Route 532), and Swamp Road. PennDOT said local access will be maintained, but drivers should plan for extra travel time as congestion builds on alternate routes. All work is weather dependent.

The bridge dates back to 1936 and carries nearly 6,000 vehicles per day despite being just 14 feet long and 25 feet wide. The structure is a single-span, one-lane bridge and has reached the point where repairs are necessary to maintain safety and reliability.

PennDOT did not release specific repair details but said the work is required to keep the bridge serviceable and protect motorists traveling one of Northampton Township’s primary corridors.

With a full closure scheduled on a heavily traveled road for most of January, drivers are urged to plan ahead and monitor traffic conditions closely.
