PHILADELPHIA, PA — As summer approaches, 311Literacy’s Great Reading Tournament (TGRT) is taking on the challenge of preventing “summer slide”—the decline in literacy skills many students face when out of school. With a library of over 10,000 free titles available in both English and Spanish, the tournament is designed to keep children engaged, motivated, and thriving academically through the summer break.
The international competition, open to readers ages 6 to 14, offers an added incentive with prizes like laptops and tablets for the top readers who log the most reading time. Registration for the tournament begins today, and the competition itself runs from June 15 to July 19. Sponsored by Canva, this initiative celebrates the power of reading to connect and inspire young minds across the globe.
“We’re so proud to see The Great Reading Tournament grow beyond borders,” said Ariadna Trapote, CEO of 311Literacy. “This summer, children from Latin America, the U.S., and even Asia will join us in discovering the joy of reading—in both English and Spanish. It’s a beautiful reminder that stories connect us all, no matter where we’re from.”
Participants begin by completing an online reading assessment to ensure they have access to books suited to their age and literacy level. TGRT’s platform tracks each student’s progress, automatically logging minutes, pages, and comprehension. With no additional effort required from parents or teachers, the program shifts the focus entirely to student-driven engagement.
The tournament’s accessible design ensures children can participate despite summer travel or schedule challenges, allowing them to read offline or online. TGRT also offers the option for children to compete individually or as part of a team, further encouraging healthy competition and collaboration.
Since its creation, TGRT has achieved impressive results. Past competitions have involved 41,000 children from 120 cities across five countries. Together, they’ve read more than 4 million minutes and over 150,000 books. Notably, nearly 30% of participants continued their reading habits well beyond the end of the program.

Through its mission to inspire reading in both English and Spanish, TGRT is building a bridge that unites children worldwide, fostering literacy, curiosity, and lifelong learning. By celebrating the joy of storytelling, the program stands as a strong advocate for academic success and cultural connection on an international scale.
