NEWTOWN, PA — Gentell, a provider of wound care solutions, has acquired ManukaMed, a New Zealand-based manufacturer specializing in honey-based wound dressings. The deal marks a strategic move that secures Gentell’s control over the only honey-based wound care product currently reimbursable by Medicare and major U.S. insurers.
The acquisition not only expands Gentell’s product offerings but also strengthens its global manufacturing network, which now includes facilities in seven countries: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Paraguay, China, and New Zealand. Gentell also takes ownership of ManukaMed’s U.S. operations, including a corporate headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, and a distribution center in Kansas City, Missouri. The business will operate under the new name Gentell ManukaMed.
“Gentell’s acquisition of ManukaMed broadens our product depth while facilitating our growth and expansion on the Australian continent and in Southeast Asia,” said David Navazio, President and CEO of Gentell. “From our beginnings in my garage thirty years ago, Gentell is now truly a global company.”
ManukaMed is known for its patented blend of medical-grade honey derived from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum Scoparium), which is scientifically validated to aid healing in chronic wounds such as venous and pressure ulcers. The formulation lowers pH levels, creating a chemical environment conducive to faster and more consistent recovery.
Gentell’s relationship with honey-based therapeutics dates back to its leadership team’s earlier ventures. Edward Quilty, Gentell’s Vice President of Corporate Development and former CEO of Derma Sciences, was among the early adopters of Manuka honey for wound treatment.
Navazio emphasized that the ManukaMed acquisition is part of a broader expansion strategy. “This highlights a very active year of growth for Gentell,” he noted, referencing the company’s recent purchase of South America-based Casex, its entrance into the Indian market, the launch of the ReStorell Liquid Protein Supplement line, and the expansion of Gentell wound care centers in the U.K.
With the ManukaMed acquisition, Gentell solidifies its standing as a global leader in wound care, combining innovative product lines with a rapidly expanding international presence.
