WILMINGTON, DE & DETROIT, MI — As summer travel surges, more families are turning to road trips as their go-to vacation choice, opting for cars over planes to save money and enjoy greater flexibility. But with inflation continuing to strain household budgets, travelers are looking for creative ways to cut costs and maximize value — especially when traveling with children, extended family, or pets.
Joe Saul-Sehy, personal finance expert and host of “The Stacking Benjamins Podcast,” says that successful travel starts with planning and budgeting for more than just gas and lodging. “Set a budget that includes everything — food, entertainment, and the unexpected. That’s where families often get caught off guard,” he advised.
One increasingly popular strategy is leveraging rewards programs that offer benefits for everyday spending. The GM Rewards program, bolstered by the newly launched GM Rewards Mastercard from Barclays, provides a practical avenue for travelers to earn on purchases they’re already making.
The card allows users to accrue points that can be redeemed across General Motors brands. From vehicle purchases and accessories to OnStar plans and Super Cruise features, the program offers a range of redemption options aimed at reducing future costs for GM customers.
“You’re already spending on things like groceries, gas and travel,” Saul-Sehy explained. “A card like this helps turn that spending into something that can actually reduce future costs and can make a real difference.”
Cardmembers can earn up to 10x points on GM purchases — with 7x points for eligible spending and an additional 3x points for GM Rewards Members. There is no cap on how many points can be earned, and new cardholders can receive a 30,000-point bonus after meeting an initial spending threshold.
As families hit the road in search of memories and mileage, GM and Barclays are betting that the combination of practical value and long-term rewards will resonate with a cost-conscious public.
