Business News

WILMINGTON, DEEnterpriseDB (EDB) announced its major contributions to PostgreSQL 18, the latest release of the world’s most widely adopted open-source database, adding more than 200 new features to support AI, hybrid deployments, and enterprise-grade performance.

The release comes as EDB’s Sovereignty Matters research found 35% of enterprises are considering PostgreSQL for next-generation AI workloads, with data-sovereignty-focused organizations achieving 12.5 times greater ROI than those still in pilot mode.

Key EDB contributions include OAuth authentication for seamless integration with enterprise identity systems, optimizer enhancements that reduce query latency and memory use, and Kubernetes-friendly extension management for streamlined DevOps automation. The new release also improves SQL standards compliance and introduces flexible index support, enabling faster innovation for analytics and AI applications.

“PostgreSQL 18 is a milestone for developers and data teams who need a database that can keep up with the demands of AI and intelligent applications,” said Jozef de Vries, chief product engineering officer at EDB.

EDB, which has contributed to PostgreSQL for more than two decades, deployed its largest team yet for this release. Engineers emphasized the long-term scalability and extensibility that the new framework unlocks for enterprise use cases.

The company also launched Building a Data and AI Platform with PostgreSQL, an O’Reilly book designed to help enterprises build sovereign, scalable AI systems on Postgres. Looking ahead, EDB is already working on PostgreSQL 19 and preparing to release its EDB Postgres AI Database, adding advanced features such as data masking, enhanced observability, and expanded Oracle compatibility.
