PHILADELPHIA, PA — Dr. Asif Ilyas, a distinguished surgeon with Rothman Orthopaedics in Philadelphia, has been named to the 2025 Orthopedic Surgery Research All Stars, placing him among the top 3% of orthopedic surgeons nationwide, according to Avant-Garde Health. This honor recognizes Dr. Ilyas for his outstanding contributions to orthopedic surgery research, as evidenced by the high quality and quantity of his published work.
The Avant-Garde Health award recognizes Dr. Ilyas’s extensive research, which encompasses over 150 scientific studies and papers, as well as several textbook chapters and editorial roles for multiple journals and textbooks. The recognition is based on a comprehensive evaluation of research contributions from over 4,700 hospitals and 424,000 physicians, with only the top 5% being honored for the volume and impact of their published work.
Dr. Ilyas is board-certified in Orthopaedic Surgery with a certificate of added qualification in Hand Surgery. He specializes in hand, wrist, elbow, and orthopedic trauma surgery, with a particular expertise in fracture surgery, nerve injury management, and pain management in orthopedic surgery. He is also recognized as an expert in “wide awake hand surgery” and has served as the Consulting Hand Surgeon for both the Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Currently, Dr. Ilyas serves as President of the Rothman Institute Foundation for Opioid Research & Education and as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. He is also a Professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and Program Director of the Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Ilyas lectures extensively at national and international conferences and is actively involved in the design and development of innovative implants for fracture and joint replacement in the upper extremity.
Dr. Ilyas’s recent research has focused on opioids and pain management strategies aimed at reducing post-operative opioid use and dependency. His leadership in this field has led to the launch of the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute’s Foundation for Opioid Research and Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing evidence-based pain management strategies and combating opioid abuse and addiction.
