Disney Hit With Global Patent Injunctions in Streaming Tech Dispute

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DEInterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) has secured a major legal victory against entertainment giant Disney, winning an injunction from a German court over patented video streaming technology.

The Munich Regional Court ruled in favor of InterDigital, determining that Disney infringed on one of its patents covering a method for dynamically overlaying a first video stream with another — such as subtitles or on-screen graphics. The decision effectively bars Disney from using the technology in Germany without proper licensing, though the company retains the right to appeal.

This ruling follows a similar outcome in Brazil, where a court recently granted InterDigital a preliminary injunction after finding that Disney violated both patents at issue in that case. Together, the decisions mark a significant escalation in a growing global dispute over intellectual property in the competitive streaming sector.

Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer at InterDigital, framed the rulings as a validation of the company’s innovation leadership. He stated that Disney has leveraged InterDigital’s patented technologies to power parts of its streaming platforms, which have become central to its multi-billion-dollar entertainment empire.

“Disney understands the importance of innovation and IP protection to its own business,” Schmidt said, urging the company to agree to fair licensing terms for the patented technologies.

The case highlights an intensifying battleground between content providers and technology innovators as streaming services continue to dominate global entertainment markets.
