SMYRNA, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a Clayton man early Friday morning.
Authorities said the crash occurred on September 5, 2025, at approximately 4:16 a.m. when a Yamaha X1A motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Smyrna-Leipsic Road, east of Big Oak Road.
According to the preliminary investigation, the motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve, left the south edge of the roadway, and entered a ditch where it struck a culvert pipe. The impact caused the driver to be ejected.
The rider, a 59-year-old man from Clayton, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His name is being withheld until family members are notified.
Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation
Smyrna-Leipsic Road was closed for an extended period as investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
The case remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is asked to contact Sergeant J. Wilson at (302) 698-8518. Authorities stressed that the investigation is active and ongoing.
