Columbus Blvd. Ramp Shutdown to Snarl Center City Traffic Thursday Morning

Traffic Advisory

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers moving through Center City should brace for major disruptions Thursday morning as construction on the I-95 CAP project forces a full shutdown of the ramp from Columbus Boulevard to Interstate 95 North and I-676/Callowhill Street.

PennDOT said the closure, part of the $329 million effort to rebuild and expand the capped structure over I-95 between Chestnut and Walnut streets, will take place Thursday, December 11, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, weather permitting.

During the shutdown, motorists will be routed onto multiple detours:

  • To reach I-95 North, drivers must continue northbound on Columbus Boulevard and enter the highway at Summer Street.
  • To reach I-676 East, motorists will turn left onto Callowhill Street, then left on 6th Street to access the ramp.
  • To reach I-676 West, drivers will follow the same path to Callowhill Street before turning left on 8th Street to enter the westbound ramp.

PennDOT noted that the ramp from I-95 North to I-676/Callowhill Street will remain open, but significant congestion is expected throughout the work zone and along the detour routes.

Officials are urging motorists to plan ahead and build in additional travel time.
