ClimeCo Marks 10 Million Carbon Credits in Texas Nitrous Oxide Project

ClimeCo

BOYERTOWN, PAClimeCo announced that its long-running nitrous oxide (N₂O) abatement project at Covestro’s Baytown, Texas facility, operated by LSB Industries, has surpassed 10 million carbon credits issued—representing roughly 10 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) equivalent abated since the project began in December 2010.

The milestone positions the initiative among the most enduring and impactful industrial N₂O abatement projects in the United States. Each credit reflects verified reductions under the Climate Action Reserve’s N₂O Abatement Protocol, which ensures transparency and integrity in global carbon markets.

“Covestro’s abatement efforts on our nitric acid unit eliminate nitrous oxide at its source and create permanent and irreversible emissions reductions that not only benefit the environment, but also benefit local communities by improving air quality,” said Victor Ortega, Baytown site manager and senior vice president of performance materials and operations for Covestro in North America. “Nitrous oxide has 273 times more global warming potential than CO₂, so we are incredibly proud to be part of a project that delivers lasting, measurable impact.”

Since its inception, the project has destroyed more than 36,000 metric tonnes of nitrous oxide—the equivalent of removing over 2.3 million gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year. The technology captures and destroys the gas directly at its source, preventing it from ever reaching the atmosphere.

“This has been a great collaborative effort by Covestro, ClimeCo, and our entire LSB Baytown team,” said Michael Griffin, general manager of LSB. “I’m extremely proud of the work we’ve done to support Covestro’s decarbonization efforts and am excited to explore other potential opportunities with Covestro.”

Now in its 15th year of operation, the Baytown N₂O abatement project remains one of the longest-running industrial initiatives of its kind in the U.S. ClimeCo continues to work with partners like Covestro and LSB Industries to advance high-integrity, data-verified emission reduction solutions that promote measurable environmental and community benefits.
