PHILADELPHIA, PA — Chestnut Hill is once again turning into one of the region’s most festive fall destinations as “Halloween on the Hill” returns for a full month of seasonal celebrations, family fun, and community spirit. Hosted by the Chestnut Hill Business District, the October-long event offers everything from scarecrow displays and ghost tours to a pet parade and neighborhood trick-or-treating.
Festivities begin September 6 with the Woodmere Art Museum’s Straw Maze, an elaborate outdoor labyrinth made of hay bales. Open weekends through November 30, the maze challenges kids ages 4 to 11 to navigate winding paths while families enjoy the crisp autumn air.
Starting October 1, the 18th Annual Scarecrow Walk at the Morris ArBOOretum & Gardens invites visitors to explore scenic trails lined with creatively crafted scarecrows made by local residents and organizations. Participants can vote for their favorites through October 20, with top entries earning cash prizes.
For those seeking chills along with charm, Hilltop Books will host Ghost Walk Stories on October 18, featuring guided evening tours filled with eerie tales and historical lore tied to Chestnut Hill’s storied past. Space is limited, and advance registration is recommended.
Sweet tooths will find plenty to enjoy throughout the month at Night Kitchen Bakery, which is offering an array of Halloween-inspired desserts, from ghost cupcakes to pumpkin pound cake and shortbread cookies shaped like bats, cats, and pumpkins.
The fun peaks on October 26 with two cornerstone events: the Chestnut Hill Halloween Pet Parade from 12:30 to 1 p.m., followed by Trick-or-Treating on the Hill from 1 to 3 p.m. Families can collect candy and allergy-friendly treats from participating shops along Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike, marked with “Treats Here” posters and teal pumpkins representing inclusivity through the FARE Teal Pumpkin Project.
