ELKTON, MD — The Cecil County Democrat Club has expanded its annual scholarship program, awarding a total of $1,500 this year to support two Cecil County Public School graduates who are beginning their studies at Cecil College. Each student will receive $750 to help offset tuition costs, part of the Club’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunity in the community.

Established in 2014, the Cecil County Democrat Club Scholarship has now provided more than $10,000 in financial assistance to local students. Administered through the Cecil College Foundation, the program is designed for high school graduates who demonstrate strong citizenship and civic responsibility. Applicants are asked to submit essays on how they plan to make a positive impact in their community.

This year’s recipients are Ava Cichosz, a North East High School graduate enrolled in Cecil College’s music program, and Braeden Means, a Bohemia Manor High School graduate deeply engaged in community service. Cichosz also serves as chair of the Scholarship Committee, reflecting her commitment to leadership and academic achievement. Means has organized charity walks benefiting the Bobby Jones CSF Foundation, led toy drives for the Ronald McDonald House, and runs a support group for children in need. “I want to help our future generations live better lives than I did when I was younger,” Means said.

Jamie Marshall, president of the Cecil County Democrat Club, praised the effort as a vital investment in young people. “It is a significant thing we do for the community and to help our young people achieve and realize their dreams,” Marshall said.

Scholarships like this provide more than financial relief. According to national research, nearly two-thirds of community college students face financial insecurity that threatens their ability to complete a degree. Local initiatives such as the Democrat Club’s program give students stability to focus on academics and long-term goals.

The scholarship will continue to be awarded annually to two Cecil County graduates who maintain at least a 2.5 GPA and plan to attend Cecil College full- or part-time. The next application cycle opens October 1 through the Cecil College Foundation.
