NORTH EAST, MD — Cecil College has unveiled a major transformation of its longtime Visual Communications program, reintroducing it under a new name: Digital Arts and Media Design. The shift reflects the college’s effort to keep pace with industry standards and evolving technology while ensuring students have clearer pathways to both careers and four-year degree programs.
Updated Curriculum for a Changing Industry
The redesigned program now emphasizes digital imaging, graphic design, photography, web design, video, and film production. Courses have been refreshed to mirror current industry practices, with continuous updates shaped by input from professionals serving on the college’s advisory boards.
Among the notable changes, the Animation and Game Design concentration—formerly Simulation Design and Gaming—now includes a new 2D animation course, expanding opportunities for students in creative media. Additionally, the Digital Commerce degree has been renamed Social Media Marketing to better align with modern terminology.
“We pride ourselves on making sure we are teaching the latest industry equipment, software, and techniques,” said Dan Krukosky, Director of the Digital Arts and Media Design department.
Balancing Faculty Expertise and Industry Insight
Cecil College has structured the program to provide students with both academic grounding and real-world experience. Introductory courses are taught by full-time faculty, ensuring close support for new students, while advanced courses are led by working professionals who bring current industry knowledge directly into the classroom.
Strengthening Transfer Pathways
The college emphasized that the rebranding is more than cosmetic. By aligning the program name and curriculum with widely used academic and professional terminology, students will find it easier to transfer credits to four-year institutions. Cecil College regularly updates articulation agreements and continues to expand transfer opportunities with partner universities.
Commitment to Applied Education
Since its founding, Cecil College has focused on applied associate degrees designed to prepare students for careers and further study. The reimagined Digital Arts and Media Design program underscores that mission, offering students access to industry-grounded training while opening doors for artistic growth and career advancement.
