PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a $2.1 million safety improvement project along Route 611 (Broad Street) between Allegheny Avenue and Hunting Park Avenue, a 1.16-mile stretch in North Philadelphia.

Construction is set to begin on Monday, June 2, and will continue through Friday, June 6. Lane closures will be in effect daily from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and again from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Drivers traveling in either direction should anticipate traffic delays and are urged to plan extra time for travel. All scheduled work is weather dependent.

The project focuses on enhancing safety in one of Philadelphia’s busiest corridors. Key improvements include replacing the two-way left-turn lane with raised concrete medians, installing ADA-compliant ramps, upgrading crosswalk pavement markings, and adding lane separator curbs. These measures are designed to address and reduce the high incidence of pedestrian, angle, and rear-end crashes in the area.

PennDOT expects these upgrades to significantly lower the number of fatal and injury crashes, enhancing overall safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.

James J. Anderson Construction Company, Inc., based in Philadelphia, is managing the project, which is fully funded through federal resources. Construction is anticipated to conclude by the summer of 2025.
