NEW CASTLE, DE & PHILADELPHIA, PABraskem (B3: BRKM3, BRKM5, BRKM6; NYSE: BAK) has announced the successful completion of a joint development program with Ardent, advancing olefin-paraffin separation processes through the innovative OptipermTM membrane technology. This breakthrough marks a significant step toward greater efficiency and sustainability in polyolefin production.

The collaboration, which began in 2020, focused on testing and refining the OptipermTM technology at a dedicated demonstration unit within Braskem’s facilities. The program achieved critical benchmarks in membrane performance, durability, and operational stability, confirming the technology’s feasibility for industrial applications.

“The successful pilot program demonstrates the tremendous potential of this technology to revolutionize olefin-paraffin separation processes,” said Bill Charlton, Chief Operating Officer at Ardent and the project lead. “We are excited to move forward with Braskem towards full commercial implementation.”

With these promising results, Braskem has revealed plans to incorporate the technology into its commercial operations, beginning with engineering and design work for the first installation. The introduction of OptipermTM is expected to enhance overall production efficiency while reducing emissions associated with traditional separation methods.

“This technology represents a significant step forward in our commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions,” said Gus Hutras, Global Process Technology Director for Braskem. “The successful pilot results align with our vision of transforming the chemicals and plastics industry through innovation while advancing our goals toward carbon neutrality. We’re excited to move this breakthrough technology into commercial implementation.”

OptipermTM leverages advanced membrane design to separate olefins and paraffins more efficiently, potentially reducing energy consumption and emissions. Braskem’s decision to proceed with full-scale adoption highlights its dedication to achieving operational excellence and sustainability in the polymers sector.
