READING, PA — The Berks Area Regional Transportation Authority (BARTA), managed by the South Central Transit Authority (SCTA), has launched a pilot program with Modeshift to modernize fare collection for its Special Services shared-ride program, which serves seniors and individuals with disabilities across Berks County.

The initiative expands the “BARTA Go Mobile” brand—already in use on fixed-route buses—to Special Services, giving customers new cashless options through a mobile app or reloadable smart card. Riders can now pay fares directly from their smartphones or with a BARTA Go Mobile card linked to an e-wallet, while family members and caregivers also have the ability to manage accounts online.

“The pilot is about providing access and convenience for our Special Services customers to pay for their trips and not worry about carrying cash when accessing the transportation they depend on,” said Greg Downing, Executive Director of SCTA. “By aligning the technology between our fixed-route and shared-ride services, we’re creating one seamless experience under the BARTA Go Mobile brand.”
