PHILADELPHIA, PA — Axalta (NYSE: AXTA) received a 2025 R&D 100 Award for its Spies Hecker Permasolid Speed-TEC Fast Cure Low Energy collision repair paint system, a technology designed to cut energy use and speed up repair times for automotive refinishing. The company’s Total Cabinet Coating Solution was also named a finalist in the Mechanical/Materials category.
Axalta said the Speed-TEC FCLE system reduces energy consumption by up to 49 percent and shortens cycle times by 50 percent compared to conventional repair systems. The two-part system — a Speed-TEC surfacer and clear coat — is engineered for rapid curing through air-drying or short bake cycles, helping repair shops increase throughput without sacrificing finish quality.
The company said the patented system delivers strong durability and color performance while setting a new sustainability benchmark for the collision repair market.
Robert Roop, Axalta’s chief technology officer, said the award highlights the company’s focus on developing practical, purpose-built solutions for its customers. Roop said the recognition reflects Axalta’s commitment to technologies that support productivity, reduce waste, and improve customer outcomes.
Axalta’s Total Cabinet Coating Solution, recognized as a finalist, offers a streamlined finishing process for manufacturers. The system is designed to deliver a high-quality appearance while reducing rework by as much as 70 percent. Features include a sprayable edge primer and topcoat that function as a single-pass application and a UV-curable roll-coat enamel that maintains color and viscosity stability.
The R&D 100 Awards, established in 1963, spotlight leading global innovations across industry, academic, and government research. Winners were honored on November 20 in Scottsdale, Arizona, marking the program’s 63rd year.
