Avantor and p-Chip Partner to Create Smart Labware With Built-In Digital IDs

Avantor

RADNOR, PA & CHICAGO, ILAvantor, Inc. (NYSE: AVTR) announced a new collaboration with p-Chip Corporation to develop a next generation of “Smart Consumables” — laboratory and clinical products embedded with digital microtransponder technology to enhance sample traceability and compliance.

The partnership merges Avantor’s global manufacturing scale with p-Chip’s microtransponder platform to create consumables — including vials, slides, tubes, cassettes, and plates — equipped with unique, durable digital identifiers. The integrated technology enables end-to-end traceability, helping laboratories and biomanufacturers maintain secure Chain-of-Identity (COI) tracking for samples, reagents, and patient materials.

“The growing demand for precision and individualized therapies is driving the need for high-fidelity sample traceability and secure COI,” Avantor said in a statement. Personalized treatments such as cell and gene therapies require every sample to be uniquely identified and verified throughout its lifecycle — from collection to patient administration.

“This innovation supports Avantor’s mission to enable scientific breakthroughs and allows us to meet high-value customer needs in rapidly evolving areas like personalized medicine,” said Corey Walker, President of Laboratory Solutions at Avantor. “Embedding digital intelligence into our consumables will deliver a new level of traceability and process control for our customers and demonstrates our commitment to developing proprietary, digitally enabled lab solutions.”

p-Chip’s technology uses microtransponders that are smaller than a grain of salt yet durable enough to withstand harsh lab environments. The chips enable automated data capture and integration with digital lab systems, significantly reducing the risk of sample misidentification.

“Our microtransponder platform will play a pivotal role in advancing traceability and compliance in lab workflows,” said Michael Hadjisavas, Chief Operating Officer for Life Sciences and Healthcare at p-Chip. “By equipping consumable labware with secure, unique digital identifiers, we are helping labs maintain an unbroken chain-of-identity for samples and reagents. This not only streamlines quality control but also accelerates the digital transformation of pharmaceutical and healthcare processes.”

The collaboration reflects a growing industry shift toward digitally intelligent lab ecosystems, where smart consumables and connected devices form the foundation of data integrity and compliance in next-generation therapeutics and diagnostics.
