Asylon Deploys Gas-Sniffing Security Robots at Indianapolis 500

Business News

NORRISTOWN, PA — Asylon, in partnership with 908 Devices, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, successfully deployed its innovative gas-sniffing security robots at the Indianapolis 500. With more than 300,000 attendees, the largest single-day sporting event in the world benefited from advanced robotics that enhanced safety and real-time situational awareness.

The DroneDog-2 robotic patrol units, built on Boston Dynamics’ Spot® platform, were equipped with 908 Devices’ InterceptIR sensors to perform continuous air monitoring and surveillance. These autonomous robots navigated through GPS-denied tunnels beneath the track, delivering critical data to the event’s emergency operations center via secure communications and Starlink backup. The robots provided live video, gas detection readings, and threat alerts in real-time through Asylon’s proprietary DroneIQ software.

“Asylon remains steadfast in our commitment to using robotics and advanced technology to help make the world a safer place,” said Brent McLaughlin, Co-Founder and COO of Asylon Robotics. “Building on our successful deployment last year, Asylon’s DroneDog system integrated into our DroneIQ software and the great technology from 908 Devices enables emergency personnel to have more situational awareness and response capabilities than ever before.”

Notably, the technology proved effective even in areas with compromised GPS and communications, ensuring uninterrupted performance during the event’s security operations. This marks an ideal use of security automation solutions to reduce human risk while delivering superior awareness in complex environments.

John Kenneweg, Vice President of Government Sales & Strategic Marketing at 908 Devices, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. “908 Devices strives to be at the forefront of chemical analysis technologies on behalf of our warfighters and emergency personnel to help keep them and the people they protect safe. The InterceptIR’s ability to identify and quantify hazardous gases in real-time, combined with a robotic platform like Asylon’s, helps ensure the safety for all involved,” he said.
