WILMINGTON, DE — The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has released Apache Grails 7.0.0, marking the project’s first major update since graduating to a top-level ASF project. The release brings a sweeping modernization of the popular Groovy-based web framework, introducing new compatibility with Java 17+, Groovy 4, and Spring Boot 3.5.
Developed for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), Grails is designed to accelerate web application development through its “convention over configuration” philosophy. The 7.0.0 release represents 18 months of collaborative effort by the open-source community, led by Project Management Committee Chair James Fredley.
“This release empowers developers with streamlined full-stack workflows and enhanced security and compliance,” Fredley said, adding that it maintains the core simplicity and productivity principles that have long defined the framework.
Among the key updates are support for Jakarta EE 10 and Spring Framework 6.2, along with significant improvements in testing, automation, and build reliability. The new version integrates containerized browser testing via Testcontainers, offering developers a standardized way to perform cross-platform functional testing.
Grails 7.0.0 also adopts a mono-repo structure that consolidates its core projects, improving development speed and ease of contribution. Additionally, a revamped Gradle build process introduces reproducible builds and Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) generation to strengthen software supply chain security.
Complementing the framework upgrade are new major releases of Grails’ most widely used plugins, including Spring Security 7.0.0, Quartz 4.0.0, and Redis 5.0.0—each enhancing security, scheduling, and caching performance.
With these changes, Apache Grails 7.0.0 aims to reinforce its standing as a modern, enterprise-ready framework that remains true to its core mission: enabling developers to build scalable, production-grade web applications faster and with less complexity.
