WILMINGTON, DE — The Apache Software Foundation has promoted two open-source projects, Apache Artemis and Apache Wayang, to Top-Level Project status, recognizing their maturity, active communities and strategic relevance in modern computing.
Apache Artemis, originally derived from Apache ActiveMQ, is a high-performance messaging platform built for microservices and cloud-native environments. The system supports multiple industry protocols — including AMQP, MQTT and STOMP — and can operate as a standalone broker, an embedded component or within Java EE application servers, giving developers broad deployment flexibility.
“Transitioning to ASF Top-Level Project status opens new opportunities for Apache Artemis,” said Christopher L. Shannon, the project’s PMC chair. He said the recognition will help expand adoption and strengthen the project’s contributor base.
Apache Wayang, also elevated to Top-Level Project, provides a unifying framework designed to integrate and orchestrate diverse data processing engines. Its architecture abstracts applications from underlying platforms such as Apache Flink, Apache Spark and TensorFlow, allowing developers to execute workloads without manually choosing or configuring data systems.
A cornerstone of Wayang is its cross-platform optimizer, which automatically selects the most effective processing engine for a given task. The feature targets organizations struggling to manage increasingly complex data workflows spanning multiple technologies.
“Achieving ASF Top-Level Project status marks an exciting milestone for Apache Wayang,” said Zoi Kaoudi, the project’s PMC chair. She noted the project’s growing community and its potential to streamline data engineering across industries.
The Apache Software Foundation said the promotions reflect ongoing momentum across its open-source ecosystem as enterprises continue shifting toward distributed architectures, interoperable data systems and scalable cloud-native solutions.
