Amalgam Rx’s Medical-Grade AI Redefines Safety and Engagement in Healthcare

WILMINGTON, DEAmalgam Rx, Inc. announced the publication of two peer-reviewed research papers validating its Medical-Grade AI™ framework, a clinically governed system that delivers safe and highly engaging digital health experiences.

The studies, published in Artificial Intelligence and Applications and Human-Centric Computing, demonstrate how Amalgam’s multi-layered guardrails and personality-driven AI design produced standout results—35-minute average sessions, 60% weekly retention, and engagement rates twice the industry standard.

The first paper, Taming Large Language Models for Healthcare – A Multi-layered System,” was presented at the 26th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ICAI 2024) and published in Artificial Intelligence and Applications. Selected from 376 submissions, it details Amalgam’s clinical-grade guardrails for the safe, scalable deployment of large language models (LLMs) in regulated healthcare environments.

This research aligns with Microsoft Research’s 2024 study The Illusion of Readiness, which found that even top AI models can produce inaccurate or fabricated medical answers. Microsoft’s study showed that minor test changes dropped accuracy from 83% to 52%, revealing how current LLMs often fail nearly half the time.

Amalgam’s second paper, “Humanizing AI: Enhancing User Engagement in Health Applications with Personality-Driven AI Design,” explores how pairing advanced LLMs with human-centered design can dramatically increase engagement in digital health applications. Results from Amalgam’s award-winning AI chat solution—used by thousands of users over several weeks—showed 35-minute average sessions, 10% exceeding one hour, 60% weekly retention, and a 67% retention rate when users interacted with the empathetic persona.

“If not kept in check, AI can bring chaos in healthcare—it’s like expecting obedience from an untamed beast,” said Bharath Sudharsan, chief data scientist and head of AI at Amalgam. “Our clinical-grade LLM guardrails go beyond standard safety filters, enabling our pharma partners to build safe, effective, and empathetic companion experiences.”

“At Amalgam, while we’re pushing the boundaries of innovation, our clinical and regulatory expertise keeps us grounded in patient safety,” said Ryan Sysko, chief executive officer of Amalgam Rx. “These guardrails don’t just contain AI’s risks—they unlock its potential, enabling scalable companion applications and meaningful engagement.”

By integrating stringent oversight and empathetic design, Amalgam’s Medical-Grade AI™ aims to bridge the gap between innovation and safety—offering a model for how artificial intelligence can responsibly enhance patient care and digital health engagement.
