MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — A significant traffic shift will take place on U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) starting Tuesday, June 24, as part of a $55 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) initiative to improve 1.8 miles of the highway in Norristown, East Norriton, and Whitpain townships.
From 9:00 AM on June 24 through December 1, northbound and southbound traffic will be redirected onto newly constructed southbound lanes between Jefferson Crossing Boulevard and Johnson Highway. This realignment supports PennDOT’s effort to widen U.S. 202 from two lanes to three, including a center turn lane, between Johnson Highway and Township Line Road.
Key upgrades include the installation of five-foot bicycle lanes, sidewalks, drainage improvements, new signals, and pavement markings. The project also involves reconstructing a bridge and culvert, building sound and retaining walls, and integrating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for improved traffic flow.
Additionally, from June 16 through July 2027, Germantown Pike will be reduced to a single lane in each direction between Swede Road and Hannah Avenue. Work on Germantown Pike will include drainage upgrades, full-depth road reconstruction, new curbs and sidewalks, traffic signal enhancements, and other infrastructure improvements. Construction will be phased to maintain traffic and access to businesses and residences.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes or allocate extra travel time, as delays and congestion are expected in the work zones. These efforts are part of a broader, multi-phase program to enhance 9.1 miles of U.S. 202, extending from Johnson Highway to Route 309 in Montgomery Township.
