100-Year-Old Bridge to Close for Major Rehabilitation in Upper Chichester

Travel Restrictions

UPPER CHICHESTER TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that construction will begin Monday, November 17, on a long-term bridge rehabilitation project along Meetinghouse Road in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County. The work will address the deteriorating structure that has served local drivers for more than a century.

Starting November 17, Meetinghouse Road will be closed around the clock between Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road) and Chichester Avenue through Friday, January 9, 2026. Drivers will be detoured via Route 491 (Naamans Creek Road), Larkin Road, Bethel Road, and Chichester Avenue. Local access will be maintained, though delays are expected. All work is weather dependent.

The single-span bridge, constructed in 1916, measures 63 feet long and 24 feet wide and currently carries nearly 10,000 vehicles daily. PennDOT classified the bridge as being in poor condition, prompting its inclusion in a $9.5 million regional infrastructure program to replace or rehabilitate multiple aging structures across the five-county Philadelphia area.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of King of Prussia is leading the state-funded project, which aims to ensure safer travel and extend the bridge’s service life well into the future.
