HARRISBURG, PA — Pennsylvania leaders and public figures gathered to highlight women’s leadership and civic engagement during a Women’s History Month panel aimed at shaping the Commonwealth’s future.

What This Means for You

  • State leaders are emphasizing women’s roles in public service and leadership
  • Scholarship funding will support Pennsylvania students pursuing higher education
  • The event is part of broader planning for the nation’s 250th anniversary

America250PA hosted the luncheon and panel Thursday at the Whitaker Center for Science & the Arts, bringing together current and former First Ladies of Pennsylvania along with Dr. Jill Biden to discuss leadership, service, and civic values.

Leaders Reflect On Public Service

The panel featured Lori Shapiro, Frances Wolf, and Michele Ridge, alongside Biden, a Pennsylvania native and former First and Second Lady of the United States. The discussion was moderated by actress and author Melissa Fitzgerald.

Participants described how the role of First Lady provides a platform to support initiatives focused on education, health, and expanding opportunity for families across the Commonwealth.

“I was honored to join this incredible group of First Ladies who have served our Commonwealth and our country,” Shapiro said, adding that women across Pennsylvania continue to play key roles in strengthening communities.

Speakers also discussed how mentorship, motherhood, and personal experiences influence leadership approaches and public service priorities.

Scholarship Program And Civic Focus

Proceeds from the event will fund America250PA’s Semiquincentennial Scholarship Program, which will distribute $250,000 to Pennsylvania high school seniors attending in-state colleges during the 2026–2027 academic year.

More than 1,800 students from all 67 counties have already applied, submitting essays on civic values and the evolving meaning of citizenship.

Part Of A Broader State Initiative

The event is part of Pennsylvania’s preparation for the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026, a milestone known as the semiquincentennial — the 250-year anniversary of the nation’s founding.

America250PA, created by state lawmakers and the governor in 2018, is coordinating efforts statewide to commemorate the anniversary through programs focused on education, preservation, innovation, and celebration.

“We’re grateful to our extraordinary guests for inspiring the next generation of Pennsylvania women to believe in public service,” said Cassandra Coleman, the organization’s executive director.
